| Leopold Café : 2202-0131 |
Colaba Causeway, near Electric House, Colaba |
| 7.30- 12.00 midnight |
| It may have been around since 1871. It may be the city’s number one dining choice (!) as recommended by backpackers’ bible Lonely Planet India. It may have a lengthy menu of North Indian and Chinese dishes, all of which are cheap and some of which are even edible. The fruit juices might be fresh and the beers cold (though not as chilled as those served in the dark and arctic “couples” bar upstairs). And the setting is undeniably appealing with its arcaded doors open to the street, the high ceiling with indolently whirring fans and the general similarity in appearance to a grand old railway station waiting room. But despite all this, we guarantee the one thing that will really stick in your mind after a visit to Leopold is just how bloody surly the waiters can be. Sam Bayoumi |
| Raw : 6522-3488 |
Haveli Resort, Ghodbunder Road, Thane District Thane |
| Daily 11pm-late. |
| New review Raw is part of Haveli, a village resort that opened six months ago on Ghodbunder Road, to cater to people living in the distant suburbs and visitors from neighbouring states. The club takes its theme rather seriously. An all-wood bar greets you with empty alcohol display shelves (the bartender said the bass-heavy sound system had sent two bottles crashing) and beer is yanked out of silver refrigerators that are more neighbourhood cold storage than slick bar material. A stray electric wire dangled in the corridor leading to the washroom. Where the club really scores, is its spacious dance floor, democratic in-house deejays (Abhi and Dhawal) and an uninhibited crowd. Raw might not yet be packed to the rafters and not all couples will feel safe riding back alone in a rickshaw to the Dahisar check naka, but at least the next time a city slicker moans, where’s the party yaar? you’ll have a ready answer. | Dome : 6639-9999 |
The InterContinental Marine Drive, 135 Marine Lines |
| Daily 6pm-12.30am |
| Few bars have the power to make you feel like a star. Sipping on a drink on a summer evening, dazzled by the pure whiteness of the décor, surrounded by a city slowly illuminating itself as the light fails, listening to the muted rush of traffic eight floors underfoot, drinking at Dome is an experience that is as spectacular the fiftieth time as the first. It’s the sort of place where the sun setting over the sea, a fairly standard aspect of Mumbai life on a regular day, becomes an event with dozens of cameras being fished out of bags and pockets to capture the moment. With the pool at your toes as you gaze down on the majestic sweep of Marine Drive, it almost makes you believe that life in this city really is what the movies make it out to be. To be reclining, practically lying down on their beds and sofas is like the ultimate meshing of Goan hedonism and urban sophistication. Dome, in a nutshell, is every supermodel-Ferrari-Möet fantasy come alive, even if you’re drinking a wretched Kingfisher. A word of advice though: at Rs 240, a pint of beer is a lousy deal. The Long Island iced tea, priced at Rs 600 (including tax) is very long indeed, and the equivalent, both in terms of potency and the amount of time it takes to drink, of at least two beers. LM |
