Mumbadevi Mandir
From Kalbadevi Road, cut across to Zaveri Bazaar to reach Mumbadevi Road. Look for the temple of Mumbadevi, an avatar of Parvati venerated by Koli fishermen, the original inhabitants of Mumbai. This city is said to have got its name from her. If its tall shikhar eludes you, look out for the queue of flower-holding devotees snaking its way through the surrounding lanes. While many spots have wishing wells, Mumbadevi temple has wishing woodwork: devotees believe that if they embed a silver coin in the wooden railings of the temple, the goddess will grant their wish. The temple priests have recently forbidden the practice (it was destroying the woodwork), but coins from Mughal and British times still shine at you from the beams.
Mumbadevi Temple, Mumbadevi Road, near Zaveri Bazaar. Daily 5am-noon, 4-8pm.
